Life Legacy


SHREWSBURY- Lois Brown Clifford, age 83, of Shrewsbury, passed away Friday, February 5,2010 at St. Vincent Hospital. She had been a resident of Shrewsbury for more than 60 years.
Lois was born in Worcester, the youngest child of Hazel (Howarth) Brown and James P. Brown. She was predeceased by her sister, Hazel Howarth Brown, and by her brothers James P. Brown, Jr. and Dr. Donald P. Brown. She is survived by her sons, James L Clifford, Jr. of Worcester, and Peter B. Clifford, Esq., his wife, Susan M. Meyer and three grandchildren, Samuel M. Clifford, Benjamin M. Clifford, and Anna M. B.Clifford, all of Oakham, also her sisters-in-law Mary Brown of Shrewsbury, Anne Brown of Osterville, a nephew, James V. Brown, and his wife, Brenda Brown, of Shrewsbury, and many other nieces and nephews.
A graduate of Classical High School in Worcester and Wheaton College in Norton, Lois worked for many years in social service: at the Walter E. Fernald State School, Watertown; the Massachusetts State House, Boston; The Department of Public Welfare, Division of Child Guardianship in Worcester from 1947 to 1954; and as a Guidance Counselor for the Clinton School Department from 1978 to 1988. In 1987, she was named Educator of the Year by the Massachusetts Association for Adult and Continuing Education.
She was a member of St. Mary's Parish, Shrewsbury, a former member of the Worcester Wheaton Club, the American Association of University Women, a Board member of the Massachusetts Association For Prevention Of Cruelty To Children, and many other clubs and organizations.
She had many interests and friends. She enjoyed skiing and golf and was a former member of the Worcester Country Club. Lois was an active member of the YWCA Neried Synchronized Swim Club. She loved the outdoors, painting, gardening, and golden retriever dogs. She enjoyed going to Cape Cod, Naples, Florida, and the islands of St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix. Her home meant a great deal to her and she enjoyed decorating according to the seasons. She enjoyed her friends and the time spent with them. Her greatest joy was simply spending time with her beloved son, Peter, and his family. Her family wishes to thank all who helped Lois: Father Mike, Brenda Brown, Loraine Covino , Gail Burns, Cindy Genco, Mary Jane Murray, and her many friends and neighbors, and in loving memory of Lyn Kaufrnan. She persevered over many years of
illness through her faith, with strength and determination to live.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend visiting hours on Monday, February 8th from 5-7 Pm in the Britton-Shrewsbury Funeral Home, 648 Main Street, Shrewsbury. Her funeral will be held on Tuesday, February 9th from the funeral home will a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 10 AM in St. Mary's Church, 640 Main St. Shrewsbury. Burial will follow at Mountain View Cemetery, Shrewsbury.
