Biography
Paul Andrew Savoie, 45, died unexpectedly Wednesday, February 3, 2010.
Paul is survived by his loving wife Jenney; three daughters; Renee (11), Nicole (8) and Ellie (6); his parents Phyllis and Lawrence Savoie, and his sister Susan Savoie. Paul also leaves behind many loving family members and friends who adored and admired him greatly. Among the other close family members Paul left behind are: in-laws Dick and Sally Given; brothers/sisters-in-law, Dana, Jennifer, Shelley and David; nieces and nephews Abbie, Jared, Seth and Caleigh; and Paul’s special cousins, especially Allen, whom he spoke with every Tuesday.
Paul grew up in Madawaska, Maine. He earned his Eagle Scout in high school. After high school, Paul served as a medic in the Army for three years. He then went on to graduate from the University of Maine at Farmington with a B.S. in Biology and Chemistry. Paul participated in the Big Brother/Little Brother program in Farmington. It was during these years that he met the love of his life, Jenney Given. They married August 12, 1989 at Surgarloaf, Maine. He went on to receive his Master’s and Physician’s Assistant degrees at Northeastern University in 1993. Paul and Jenney moved to Melrose MA at this time, finally settling in the Shrewsbury area.
For the last 17 years Paul worked at UMass Memorial Hospital as a Physician’s Assistant at the Division of Plastic Surgery and the Department of Surgery. He was a wound-care expert and worked almost exclusively with burn patients, many of whom credit Paul with saving their lives, considering Paul a close friend. He recently received the honor of an appointment as Instructor in the Division of Plastic Surgery. This was given as a reflection of his enormous contribution in education and training of students and residents, as well as his high devotion to patient care. Endlessly patient and compassionate, Paul gave of himself without reservation to those in need.
Paul was completely devoted to his family and immersed himself in outdoor activities, especially biking, skiing, sailing and hiking. He enjoyed many years of skiing at Mont Ste. Anne, Quebec with his family and friends. Paul loved coaching the Ski Ward race team in Shrewsbury for 13 years. He loved sailing his Hobie Cat on Moosehead Lake in Maine, enthusiastically taking friends and family “for a ride.” The Given family camp at Beaver Cove was a regular and beloved treat for him and his family. In the Shrewsbury area Paul enjoyed extreme mountain biking with his buddies year-round. Jenney called him the day before he died while he was biking Mt. Pisca. He said to her, “It’s so beautiful out here! I wish you were with me – it’s so beautiful!”
