Edward W. “Big Ed” Usher, 72 of Auburn died Saturday March 31, 2018 surrounded by his loving family.

Ed was born and raised in Worcester son of the late Leroy D. Usher, III and Marjorie A. (Skeates) Usher. He graduated from Worcester Boys Trade School and served his country proudly with the United States Army being honorably discharged in 1968.

He met the love of his life Gail P. Carlson in elementary school and they married in 1966.

Ed had been a salesman in the automobile industry for many years before opening his own Auto Repair business, Usher’s Foreign Auto in 1979.

Ed’s hobbies were fishing, hunting, gardening, playing cribbage and summering at his home in Maine. He was also a member of the Worcester Surfcasters Club.

Ed leaves behind his wife of 52 years, Gail P. (Carlson) Usher; two children, Karen E. Couture and her husband Robert L. of Charlton and Edward T. Usher of Auburn; five grandchildren Mathew A. Cairns of Oxford, Zachary E. Cairns of Charlton, G. Isaac Cairns of Charlton, Emily K. Usher of Millbury and Jason E. Usher of Auburn; two great grandchildren, Joel R. Cairns and Elliott Q. Cairns; four siblings, Marjorie Powell of Maine, Arthur Usher of Vermont, Elizabeth Chase of Barre, William T. Usher of Maine and Susan Bergman of Leicester; also survived by many nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by three brothers, Leroy IV, Joseph and James Usher.

Family and friends are invited to visit with Ed’s family on Thursday April 5th from 4-7 PM in the BRITTON-WALLACE FUNERAL HOME, 91 Central Street, Auburn. His funeral will be held on Friday April 6th at 11:00 am at Pakachoag Church, 203 Pakachoag Street, Auburn. Burial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to VNA Care and Hospice, 120 Thomas Street, Worcester, MA 01608 or to a charity of one’s choice.
