Obituary for Helen F. Estaphan (Hughes)

Helen F. Estaphan (Hughes)
Helen F. (Hughes) Estaphan, 97 of Shrewsbury passed away peacefully on March, 15, 2018 at home surrounded by her family.

Helen was born in Worcester, a daughter to the late Thomas A. and Katherine T. (Costello) Hughes where she was a graduate of Commerce High School and went on to study nursing at the Memorial Hospital School of Nursing.

Upon graduation she worked in the maternity ward for the hospital and later, after staying home to raise her children, returned to her profession attending to patients and residents needing extended care. Nursing was her calling whether it was the joy of birth or sorrow at the loss of life she was there with a sharp mind and a gentle touch to encourage, to uplift or to comfort a patient or family member.

She was an avid reader, enjoyed knitting and crocheting, and was a wonderful cook and baker. She relished a shopping trip with her sisters seeking the perfect bargain, it was like a sport and the mall was their playing field.

She is survived by three sons, Thomas C. Estaphan and his wife Barbara of Shrewsbury, Stephen P. Estaphan and his wife Helen of Grafton; and Charles F. Estaphan, three grandsons, Christopher, Jason and Brian Estaphan and his wife Laura, and three granddaughters Maura Nascimento and her husband Roy, Nicole Estaphan and Elizabeth Rodrique and her husband Thomas; seven great grandchildren James, Paige, Brendan, Benjamin, Caitlin, Meghan and Owen; and several nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by two sisters, Margaret R. Hughes and Mary Flannery and her former husband Charles A. Estaphan.

The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to Effie for her compassion, friendship and skilled assistance, and the staff at JHC Hospice for making Helen's final days comfortable and peaceful.

Family and friends will honor and remember Helen's life by gathering for calling hours at BRITTON-SHREWSBURY FUNERAL HOME, 648 Main Street, Shrewsbury, on Tuesday March 20, 2018 from 9:30-10:30 a.m. before leaving in walking procession to Saint Mary's Church, 640 Main Street, Shrewsbury where her Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery in Worcester. In lieu of flowers memorial contribution may be made to Abby’s House, 52 High St, Worcester, MA 01609 (www.abbyshouse.org) or to a charity of one’s choice.
