Obituary for Lewis J "Lewie" Hodgerney Sr.

Lewis J "Lewie"  Hodgerney Sr.
Lewis J. “Lewie” Hodgerney, Sr., 96, lifelong resident of Shrewsbury died Wednesday November 15, 2017 surrounded by his loving family.

He was born and raised in Worcester, son of the late Ira and Dolores (Goyette) Hodgerney. He served his country proudly during W.W. II with the United States Navy having served for 6 years aboard the USS Kane, USS Lawrence, USS Sands, USS Barnegut and the USS Hannepin and being honorably discharged on December 8,1945.

After the war ended and his service was complete with the Navy, Lewie came to Shrewsbury got married to the love of his life, Rosalie E. Fleming and started a job a little while later as a carpenter for the Massachusetts State Police. He worked for over 38 years for “Troop C” covering several barracks until he retired in 1986. He also was a Special Police Officer for the Town of Shrewsbury for 37 years.

Lewie enjoyed life, and his life included music. In years past he played the Saxophone for many local small-time bands including Dol Brissette and Phil Scott at different venues on Lake Quisigamond. He was a lifetime member of the Greendale Retired Men’s Club and was very active in American Legion Post 397 in Shrewsbury. He also found time to coach his boys for the Shrewsbury Little League for many years.

He enjoyed spending long days at the beach, having a well-mixed cape codder, bowling, Big Band Music, Playing Bocce at the IAVC, Paw Sox games with Jack, and special holidays and Sunday dinners with the Bowles and St. Pierre families.

He his wife of 34 years, Rosalie E. (Fleming) Hodgerney died in 1983. He leaves his loving children, Mary Kennedy Eastham of San Jose, CA, Lewis J. Hodgerney, Jr., and his fiance Martha Casey of Holden and David Hodgerney and his wife Wendy of Shrewsbury; a grandson Owen Hodgerney of Shrewsbury; several nieces and nephews; and special friends the Bowles and St. Pierre Families. Besides his wife, he was predeceased by a grandson, Michael, a brother, Raymond and his longtime companion Phyllis Gobeille.

The Hodgerney family wishes to send their gratitude to all the Phillips Avenue friends for their love and continued support.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Lewie’s family on Friday December 1, 2017 from 4:00-7:00 pm in the BRITTON-SHREWSBURY FUNERAL HOME, 648 Main Street, Shrewsbury. His funeral will be on Saturday December 2, 2017 with a funeral Mass celebrated at 10:00 am in Saint Anne’s Church, 130 Boston Turnpike, Shrewsbury. Burial will be held privately. Memorial donations may be sent to St.Annes Church 130 Boston Tpk Shrewsbury Ma.
