Edward was born in Shrewsbury, he was the son of the late Maryanna (Kolodziejczak) and Charles Michalak. Edward lived in Shrewsbury all his life. When he was younger he would build model airplanes and for “Spag's” and “Spag's” would display them in his hobbie department. He graduated from Major Howard Beal High School. He was a member of the Shrewsbury Crew Team. After high school Edward went to work for Worcester Gear Works, Inc., and later on his 21st birthday he enlisted into the United States Coast Guard during World War II, serving from 1942 to 1945. He was stationed in Chatham on Cape Cod and later rose to the rank of Chief Machinist. His Sea Duty took him to the North Atlantic where he served on the United States Coast Guard Cutters “Mojave and the “Unalga.” He was on convoy duty protecting the United States Convoys from German Submarines. After the service Edward returned to Worcester Gear Works, where he became Vice President. Edward was a member of the American Gear Mfg. Edward was a past member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Shrewsbury and the American Legion Chester P. Tuttle Post # 279 of Auburn. Edward was a member of St. Anne's Church in Shrewsbury where he was a past member of the Finance Committee. Edward was involved in helping build some of St. Anne's winning Parade Floats. He was a kind and generous man, always there when anyone needed him. Edward did everything with his family. He loved taking his family to Cape Cod , or to the mountains. He enjoyed working in his yard alongside his wife Lucy and together they always had a “giant” garden. When “Spag's” would give away free tomato plants he would plant all 60 plants, he wanted to make sure he had enough to give away to his whole family.

Edward retired from Worcester Gear Works in 1987. After that he continued to spend his time with his wife Lucy. They enjoyed “Polka” dancing, going to the Sea Shore or traveling to his son's farm in Upstate New York and they especially enjoyed all their grandchildren.

Edward touched the lives of so many people. He will be greatly missed by all of his family and friends and he will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, and gentle ways.
