Obituary for Joseph O'Malley Sr.
Joseph Bernard O’Malley, 96, of Shrewsbury, formerly of Clinton, died Wednesday, December 26, 2012 in Shrewsbury Nursing and Rehabilitation Center after an illness.
His wife of 51 years, Mabel G. (Cairns) O’Malley, also originally from Clinton, died in 1993. He leaves his son, Joseph B. O’Malley, Jr., and daughter-in-law, Suzanne, of Annandale, Virginia; and two granddaughters, Meghan O’Malley Groves (Brett) and Kerrigan O’Malley.
He was born and raised in Clinton, the youngest child of the late Thomas J. O’Malley and Annie T. (Mortimer) O’Malley. He also was preceded in death by his five brothers, John O’Malley, George O’Malley, Thomas O’Malley, Philip O’Malley and Francis O’Malley, and his three sisters, Catherine Balvin, Mary Keating and Sr. Lourdes O’Malley of the Presentation Order. He attended St. John’s School in Clinton and graduated from Clinton High School in 1933 and the College of the Holy Cross, cum laude, in 1938.
Mr. O’Malley worked for many years as a senior executive for the United States Government in Boston and Washington, DC, retiring in 1973 as Deputy Assistant Commissioner for the General Services Administration. After retirement, he lived for many years in Centerville on Cape Cod, and in the Southgate community in Shrewsbury.
He was a member of the President’s Council at the College of the Holy Cross. He was actively involved with the Boy Scouts of America in Arlington, MA and the Cape Cod Irish Children’s Program.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Mr. O’Malley’s family on Thursday, January 3, 2013 from 9:30 -10:30 a.m. in the Britton-Shrewsbury Funeral Home, 648 Main St, Shrewsbury. His funeral Mass will follow and will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. in Saint John the Guardian of Our Lady Parish, 80 Union Street, Clinton, MA. Mr. O’Malley will be buried next to his wife in St. John’s Cemetery, Clinton. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Sisters of the Presentation, 128 Willow St, Leominster, MA 01453.
