Obituary for Thomas A. "Tom" Hammond Sr.

Thomas Hammond.Thomas A. “Tom” Hammond, Sr., 82, of Auburn died Tuesday December 25, 2012 in the Rose Monahan Hospice Residence in Worcester, after a brief illness.

His wife, Mary C. (D’Antonino) Hammond died in 2000. He leaves his loving family, Nancy A. Estabrook and her husband, Leland of Wawautosa, Wisconsin and Christina Marie Alexander of Sturbridge, Michael T. Hammond and his wife, Linda of Auburn, Alan J. Hammond and his wife, Cindy of Oxford and Thomas A. Hammond, Jr. of Homestead, Florida; also survived by 18 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren; a brother, David Hammond and 4 sisters, Ida LaPoint, Mary Johnson, Alice Champagne, and Carol Sarkisian; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by 3 brothers, John, James and Robert Hammond and 2 sisters, Isabell Dunshee and Louise Naumiec.

Mr. Hammond was born and raised in Worcester, son of the late Oliver J. and Marion (Gagnon) Hammond. He lived in Auburn for 49 years.

Tom had worked for over 40 years as a Machinist for The Morgan Construction Company in Worcester, retiring in 1995. He especially enjoyed his retirement years visiting Cape Cod and fishing in the company of his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He was a member of Saint Joseph’s Church; the Chester P. Tuttle American Legion Post # 279, both in Auburn and he was a member of the Morgan Retiree’s Association.

The Hammond family takes comfort in knowing that Tom & Mary were able to spend Christmas together.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Tom’s family on Friday, December 28, 2012 from 6-8 PM in the Britton–Wallace Funeral Home, 91 Central Street, Auburn. His funeral will be held on Saturday, December 29, 2012 from the funeral home, with a funeral Mass at 10 AM in Saint Joseph’s Church, 189 Oxford Street North, Auburn. Burial with military honors will follow in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton, MA. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to St. Jude Children Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
