George R. Bell, 91, a Special Police Officer and longtime resident of Shrewsbury died Monday, December 17, 2012 after a brief illness.

His wife and best friend of 64 years, Louise M. (Dobson) Bell died in 2008. He leaves his loving daughter, Nancy J. Favulli and her husband, Paul of Shrewsbury; two cherished granddaughters, Elizabeth Jean Favulli of Westborough and Kathryn Bell Kozub and her husband, Bradley R. Kozub of Grafton; also survived by several nieces and nephews. He was preceded by two siblings, Robert Bell and Isa Watson.

George was born in Worcester, son of the late Robert and Elizabeth (Ducat) Bell. As a young man he moved to Shrewsbury in 1936. George served his country proudly during W.W. II in the Asiatic Pacific Theater with the United States Navy.

During Mr. Bell’s working career he worked for the Norton Company for 15 years and also served his fellow citizens and the Town of Shrewsbury as a Special Police Officer for over 20 years, retiring in 1995.

He was a member of Salem Covenant Church in Worcester. His other involvements included being a member and at one time the Vice-President and Chairman of the Frohsinn Club; a 32 Degree Mason with the Matthew John Whittall Masonic Lodge in Shrewsbury; a member of the Victor R. Quaranta American Legion Post # 397; and a member of the Massachusetts Patrolman Association. He also maintained the Donahue Rowing Center for many years.

George was a good hearted man who would help anyone. He enjoyed volunteering as Senior Greeter at the Shrewsbury High School and was a fixture at the starting line of the Boston Marathon for many years.

George was known to be a very humble man and will be missed greatly by his family and friends.






Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Mr. Bell’s family on Friday, December 21, 2012 from 4-6 PM in the Britton-Shrewsbury Funeral Home, 648 Main Street, Shrewsbury. Funeral services for George will be held on Saturday, December 22, 2012 at 10 AM in Salem Covenant Church, 215 East Mountain Street, Worcester.
