Arthur M. Quitadamo, 83, longtime Shrewsbury resident died Sunday, December 16, 2012 in Millbury Healthcare Center with his loving family by his side after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
His devoted wife and best friend of 57 years, Gladys G. (Gallati) Quitadamo died in 2010. He leaves his loving children, Donna Felice and her husband, William of Grafton, Arthur J. Quitadamo and his wife, Deborah of Medfield, Mary Riani and her husband, Roger of Millbury and James P. Quitadamo and his wife, Jeanne of Shrewsbury. His son Robert, predeceased him in 1977. He also leaves ten grandchildren, Susan and her husband, Alberto Jarquin, Amy and her husband, Kenneth Salsman , Robert, Ellyse, Sarah, Nicholas and Jack Quitadamo, Rachel, Nicholas and Gina Riani; two brothers, Camillo and Pasquale Quitadamo; and a special friend of 76 years Michael Mazzone and his wife Dolores Mazzone. He was predeceased by his brothers, Michael and Ralph and two sisters, Ann Connors and Virginia Monfreda.
He was born in Worcester on May 29, 1929, son of the late Pasquale and Josephine (Fenio) Quitadamo. He graduated from Worcester North High School in 1948 and the Massachusetts Military Academy in 1952. Later in his life, Arthur continued with his education and received a Business Administration Degree from Worcester Junior College. He also graduated from WPI School of Industrial Management. In 2004, he was the Recipient of WPI’s Albert Schwieger Professional Achievement Award from the School of Industrial Management.
Arthur served his country proudly with the Massachusetts Army National Guard, 181st Infantry, 26th Division and retired as Major in the United States Army Reserves after 20 years of service. He also served the Town of Shrewsbury as an Elected Town Meeting Member for 6 years, a member of the Finance Committee for 12 years, serving as chairman for 8 of those years. He was appointed to the Design and Building Committee for the Senior Center that was completed in 1999.
His other involvements included serving as Director and Treasurer of the Worcester Family Health and Social Service Center and Director of the Worcester Alliance for Education. Arthur was a faithful parishioner of Saint Anne’s Parish, serving as a lector and Eucharistic minister, Bishop’s Fund committee member, and Human Services volunteer.
Mr. Quitadamo was employed as the Corporate Credit Manager for 18 years at Crompton and Knowles Corporation in Worcester. He then went on to begin a successful career as a Commercial Banker, retiring in 1991, as Senior Vice President of Corporate Banking at the former Shawmut Worcester County Bank.
Arthur enjoyed traveling extensively with his wife, Gladys. One of their simplest pleasures was their daily walk to Saint Anne’s Church to attend morning Mass. He also was an avid Red Sox fan and enjoyed the time he spent at the Greendale Retired Men’s Club.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Arthur’s family on Thursday, December 20, 2012 from 4-7 PM in the Britton-Shrewsbury Funeral Home, 648 Main Street, Shrewsbury. His funeral will be held on Friday, December 21, 2012 with a funeral Mass celebrating his life at 10 AM in Saint Anne’s Church, 130 Boston Turnpike, Shrewsbury.
